The Juan Pablo Duarte (JPD) Project

The Juan Pablo Duarte (JPD) Project, originated by Santiago Paniagua, founder and president of CENDA, has been in the forefront of CENDA’s mission since its foundation in 2010. The organization has worked tremendously hard to raise the funds by hosting community events, knocking on doors, and reaching out to community leaders. The purpose of the statue is to create a space where our people can feel proudly represented even though they are far away from their homeland. Currently, Newark is composed of approximately 25,000 dominicans (4.1% of the population). It is one of the largest Domincan populated cities in the state of New Jersey, and is also home to many Dominican-owned businesses.

When devising the plans for this statue, it was clear that the statue should be developed by a Domincan artist, someone who would be able to recreate a structure that would adequately depict the physique and2 Column elegance of Juan Pablo Duarte. We went straight to the Dominican Republic in search of right person for the job. A young man by the name of Yuseppe Garcia, from Santiago de los Caballeros, was recommended to us by a number of local community leaders who shared that this young man was responsible for a number of monuments all over the country, and was quickly gaining recognition as one of the most talented sculpture artists of the Dominican Republic. Meeting Yuseppe was a blessing, he explained to us the process of creating a statue of this caliber, from beginning to end. He told us this would take quite some time, and a large amount of financial resources to create it, get it licensedand authorized to be shipped overseas to the US, local government and state taxes, maritime shipping and most importantly, the protective wrapping it would require in order to not be damaged in transport. Through the years and defying all obstacles including Covid-19, which paralyzed the entire project for 3-4 years, the organization never lost hope, and has worked tirelessly to raise $93,000 for the production of the statue, and another $20,000 for licensing, wrapping, taxes, and transportation to the US. After 15 long years of dreaming for this moment, the statue finally arrived in the US in November of 2024. The approved location of the statue has also changed a few times throughout the years, as the city has developed and parks became homes for other statues since ours was not ready in the initially anticipated time frame.

Our Mission and Vision

Since its inception in 2010, CENDA has strived to be a cultural and family organization, composed of Dominicans, Dominican-Americans, and international allies of our community. Our mission is to bridge the gap between our community and the resources that are available to them. We want to create a place where people can find structure and support by aiding in things such as societal integration, job search, housing, education, health care, and so much more. Our vision is simple, we want the Dominican community in the State of New Jersey to be organized in such a way that in can leverage its power and strengthen the economy of our city and state. Our community is composed of educated people; business owners, entrepreneurs, and professionals in every field. We want to see the Dominican community uplifted, represented, and empowered, so that we can also support and uplift other communities around us.

The new and absolute final location of the Statue was approved by the Municipal Council of the City of Newark, and we were given full authority and resolution to place the statue in Thomas Silk Park, located in the West Ward of the City of Newark, which is right off of Park Avenue, better known as ‘Republica Dominicana Way’. The new location is perfect, as it is in a highly-populated Dominican area, and is right across from the park where we celebrate our annual Dominican Pride Day Festival.

The new location is perfect, as it is in a highly-populated Dominican area, and is right across from the park where we celebrate our annual Dominican Pride Day Festival. We have now officially entered the final stages of this project, and we are so close to the ultimate goal of mounting and unveiling the long awaited statue of Juan Pablo Duarte. Our goal is to complete this project before our Festival this year, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, July 12, 2025. We appreciate your support through the years and we know that you will help us get to the finish line and move on to larger projects for our community.
